Travel  Like a Local

When it comes to understanding a destination, locals always know best.

In that spirit, Visit Loudoun offers a series of tailor-made itineraries designed by local tourism ambassadors geared to specific interests. In this itinerary, community members with children between the ages of six and 14 captured how best to enjoy a family weekend road trip through Loudoun. Stay in one of Loudoun’s family-friendly hotels where breakfast is included and kids can splash in a pool: Hampton Inn Dulles/Cascades or the Residence Inn Dulles Airport. - Happy travels!

Day 1

After breakfast at the hotel, head into downtown Leesburg to rent bikes from Pedego Electric Bikes located close to the Washington & Old Dominion Railroad Regional Park. A 45-mile hiking and cycling trail on the bed of a former railway line, the W&OD runs for 20 miles through Loudoun from Sterling to Purcellville. Take your e-Bike west toward Purcellville, wind-in-your-hair, forest and farm fields all around. After the ride return to eastern Loudoun for lunch at the retro-style Silver Diner in Ashburn where the salads, sandwiches and burgers are tasty updates of American classics.

Spend the afternoon at one of the many nearby indoor recreational spots such as iFly Loudoun, Top Golf, K1 Speed or, for skating fans, Ashburn Ice House. For something more educational, the Loudoun Heritage Farm Museum in Sterling tells the story of Loudoun’s rich agricultural history.

Ready to slow down for the evening?  Settle into one of the enormous seats at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in One Loudoun where dinner and drinks are delivered while you watch a movie.

Day 2

Make your way to scenic Bears Den Overlook above historic Bluemont in western Loudoun, part of the world-famous Appalachian Trail.  At 1,350 feet, the rocky shaded outcrop offers a spectacular panorama of the Shenandoah Valley and the folds of the Blue Ridge Mountains.  Access the overlook from the Bears Den day-use parking lot or challenge the family to take the steep half-mile hike from the lower lot just off Route 7.  After the hike, head to Great Country Farms for more outdoor family fun. The farm offers everything from apple and pumpkin picking to wagon rides, swings, slides and sluices. Don’t miss the apple cider donuts in the farm store.

It’s time for some afternoon refreshment. Make your way to one of Loudoun’s family-friendly breweries to enjoy lunch, outdoor games and beautiful views. Nearby Bluemont Station Brewery & Winery does excellent burgers alongside craft beer and wine. From here it’s back east to Purcellville to treat your kids to the games at the newly-opened Jackpot Pinball Arcade.  With more than 40 pinball machines from new releases to retro games from the 70s, you will all feel young again!

Finish your day with dinner at one of Purcellville’s exceptional family-friendly restaurants. Options include Monk’s BBQ, The Purcellville Pub, The Local Cut and 900 Degree Brick Oven Pizza.
